Rick Mocklin
Rick is the lead singer for Southern Voice and has been comfortable behind the microphone for the last 44 years. Rick was hired as the track announcer at Jefferson Downs Race Track in Kenner, La. in 1974 when he was only 17 years old. At that time he was the youngest race caller in the country
. Since then, Rick has announced at a number of race tracks around the country, including the New Orleans Fair Grounds. It wasn't until about six years ago that Rick started singing on a part-time basis.
Louisiana legend Harvey Jesus gave Rick the chance to sing with his band Fire, and one song turned into a set and then turned into sometimes doing entire four hour shows with the group. Performing with Harvey Jesus and Fire gave Rick the experience and comfort level needed to venture out on his own, with his own band.
Rick's song list continues to grow as he adds more to his repertoire. Rick has a knack for putting his own touch on both the New Orleans and nationally-known tunes. His renditions of songs by Fats Domino, Ernie K-Doe, Elvis Presley, Johnny Rivers and Bobby Darin have become crowd favorites.
Rick's stage presence and ability to charm and capture an audience have been compared to his mentor, Harvey Jesus. Audience participation is a big part of an event with Rick Mocklin and the Southern Voice. Rick feels like since he had the chance to sing with a legend like Harvey Jesus, the least he can do is offer that chance to anyone who feels ready to serenade an audience.
Rick encourages participation, so if you want to sing back up with him, just let him know!
